A Whale of a Tale

A chance meeting on Australia's Gold Coast in 1979 led to the creation of one of Australia's remarkable heritage tourist attractions.

As a community-driven social entrepreneur, Peter J Snow secured a gift of Australia's last derelict whaling station to The Jaycees Community Foundation Inc, a not-for-profit Foundation that he then chaired.

His vision of the creation of a heritage attraction capturing Australia's whaling history for future generations has now been visited by more than 2 million people and contributed more than A$45 million to the local economy.

Having retired after nearly 50 years involvement he remains Patron of the Foundation which has been renamed Albany Heritage Foundation Inc and owns Albany's Historic Whaling Station at Discovery Bay, Albany, Western Australia. The remarkable project history is related in "Timing is Everything".

The project continues to win awards and took out the Gold Awards for "Tourist Attractions" and "Cultural Tourism" at the 2025 Western Australian Tourism Awards.
